Arts-Related Haiti Relief Efforts

Arts-Related Relief Efforts:

The Waterloo Center for the Arts, Friends of the Art Center, and the national chapter of the Haitian Art Society have partnered to establish a Haiti Quake Relief Fund.

We urge you to show your appreciation for the cultural gifts that Haiti has bestowed upon us by helping the Haitian people in their time of need. Please consider a generous contribution to this fund, or any other charitable organization providing emergency relief in Haiti.

Dear Friends:
The news coming in of the earthquake in Haiti is almost incomprehensibly dreadful. We are responding to this disaster by thinking about Haiti’s future, through the creation of a Haitian Artists’ Relief Fund. Indigo Arts is cooperating in this endeavor with Nancy Josephson (artist, author of the book, Spirits in Sequins: Vodou Flags of Haiti, musician, and founder of The
Angel Band).

For more see http://indigoarts.com/news_haiti_earthquake2010.html

We need the help of our friends and customers. We are putting a number of Haitian vodou flags and other artworks for sale on our site and in the gallery. 100% of the proceeds will go to the artists, to help in their recovery from this disaster.

A similar effort is being mounted by our friend Ted Frankel, fellow Haitian art aficianado and owner of SIDESHOW, the store at the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore. For that site, see: http://www.sideshowbaltimore.com/SIDESHOWsite/HELP_HAITI.html

We are also selling wonderful papier maché bird and fish ornaments made by (and for the benefit of) the children of the Art Creation Foundation for Children, in Jacmel, Haiti. For more on the Foundation, see http://artforhaitianchildren.org/

Work will also be on display at our website at Indigo Arts Gallery, beginning on January 14th, 2010 (12 to 9pm).  Regular hours:  Wednesday to Saturday, 12 to 6pm.  We expect to mount a more extensive Haitian Earthquake Benefit show in the near future.  Please keep checking back to www.indigoarts.com.

Art Creation Foundation for Children (ACFFC) is a grassroots project seeking the opportunity for success by introducing the world of art to Haitian children who are extremely underprivileged, in the town of Jacmel, Haiti. ACFFC provides 60+ students three meals each day, provides tuition for their schooling, uniforms, supplies, and introduces artisan skills to these
children who would not have the opportunity and access to any of the above. These children have learned to care for each other and are a community, building skills that will give them a voice and means by which to survive in Haiti.  We are not a band aid.  We are growing independent, self confident, articulated, compassionate young adults, the hope for Haiti.
